چکیده

The pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal, Annonaceae] tree produces the largest edible tree fruit native to the United States (Darrow 1975; Layne 1996). This fruit, known commonly as the “poor man’s banana,” may reach up to 1 kg in size. Pawpaws grow wild in the mesic hardwood forests of 26 states in the eastern United States, ranging from northern Florida to southern Ontario (Canada) and as far west as eastern Nebraska (Kral 1960); as shown in Fig. 1. Pawpaws are hardy to USDA growing zone 5 (–15°F, –9.4°C) and flourish in the deep, rich fertile soils of river-bottom lands where they grow as understory trees or thicketshrubs (Sargent 1890). The unique qualities of the pawpaw fruit, ornamental value of the tree, and the natural compounds in the leaf, bark, and twig tissues that possess insecticidal and anti-cancer properties (McLaughlin 1997), suggest that pawpaw has great potential as an alternative high-value crop.

The activities of acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase were investigated in two varieties of ripening Carica papaya fruit; Oblong-shaped variety which is also known as ‘Agric pawpaw’ and Pear-shaped variety which is also known as ‘Local pawpaw’. Acid phosphatase activity decreased significantly (p < 0.01) throughout the ripening stages from 0.0186±0.0006 to 0.0037 ± 0.0002μmol/min/g fresh ...

Production of mixed fruit (pawpaw, banana and watermelon) wine using Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from palm wine

Pawpaw, banana and watermelon are tropical fruits with short shelf-lives under the prevailing temperatures and humid conditions in tropical countries like Nigeria. Production of wine from these fruits could help reduce the level of post-harvest loss and increase variety of wines. Pawpaw, banana and watermelon were used to produce mixed fruit wines using Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from pa...

Annonacin in Asimina triloba fruit: implication for neurotoxicity.

INTRODUCTION The acetogenin, annonacin, from the tropical annonaceous plant Annona muricata, is a lipophilic, mitochondrial complex I inhibitor reported to be more toxic than rotenone to mesencephalic neurons. The temperate annonaceous plant Asimina triloba (pawpaw) is native to the Eastern United States and products are available online. This study determined whether annonacin is in the pawpaw...

The Ecological Significance of Clonal Growth in the Understory Tree, Pawpaw (Asimina triloba)

We evaluated three possible functions of clonal growth related to genet persistence in the root-suckering understory tree pawpaw, Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal: (1) risk spreading through multiplication of stems, (2) enhanced establishment and survival of new stems, and (3) horizontal expansion growth of patches. The number, diameter growth, and spatial distribution of annual stem recruits were ex...
